Summer 2012 - Seven Projects

We’ve had a very busy summer! Here’s a very brief idea of what we’ve been up to… there’s so much more we could say about each of these fab projects.

Health and Wellbeing Consultation
We worked with Cardiff Royal Infirmary and Communities First to run some creative consultation workshops around Adamsdown and Splott. We asked questions like, ‘How does your environment affect your health and wellbeing?’
The responses gathered from the workshops are now being used a) to put together a report to be used in local workplans, and b) to inspire some new artwork for the corridor in the CRI.

Janner House DVD and People Can DVD
We’ve recently created short films with 2 local organisations to help them promote their services. We enjoyed working closely with staff and clients at Janner House, and with staff and volunteers at People Can’s ‘Switched On’ project on every aspect of filmmaking, from scripting to the final edit.

St. Teilo's High School pupils with their work of art

Part of the newly transformed subway near Clarendon Road
Llanedeyrn Subway
We had a great time on this mural project to paint a subway in Llanedeyrn, working together with local police, St. Teilo’s High School and Llanedyrn Primary School. Pupils and police were involved from designing images to painting the subway itself, and the project was a huge success. You can read all about it in the South Wales Echo, click here for the newspaper clipping

GRT showcase
On June 25th People Around Here joined hundreds of others at the Gypsy, Roma Traveller History Month event in St. David’s Hall, Cardiff. We were showcasing our work with travellers and Czech Roma young people over the last few years.

Marlborough parking
People Around Here created a bespoke assembly and workshops to address the issue of problem parking around Marlborough Primary School. We had great fun with the junior pupils designing images for a poster for their school gates. The junior PCSOs will also use the image for a flyer to stick under windscreen wipers of cars parked dangerously around the school.

Drama workshop in progress - retelling the stories of an older generation
Intergenerational project
During July we brought together older volunteers and pupils in Ysgol Gyfun Plasmawr and Peter Lea Primary school in Fairwater for a week of creative activities. The older volunteers shared stories from their own lives, which the pupils then ‘retold’ through music, art and drama. It was a fantastic experience for all generations involved, and one we hope to repeat in other Cardiff areas. Watch this space for live performances from these groups in early October!

Adamsdown Transition
We spent 2 days in Adamsdown Primary School on a pilot project about the transition to high school. The pupils worked alongside a few year 7 pupils from Willows High School. They wrote and recorded a song, produced artwork and devised dramas, and then showed off all their hard work in a performance for all the Junior pupils.
