16-60: A Woman's Voice

We are 2 months into our heritage film project - '16-60: A Woman's Voice'. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund's 'Young Roots' programme, we are working with a group of girls from Butetown and Grangetown over the next year to explore through the personal stories of local women the ways in which Butetown and Grangetown have changed over the last 60 years.

The girls have been learning film production skills and practising interview techniques. Tonight we're off to Cardiff Story for a tour of the modern, interactive museum, where some of our project films may eventually end up on display.

The project has already made it into the press! Check out this story in the Western Mail

Summer 2012 - Seven Projects

We’ve had a very busy summer! Here’s a very brief idea of what we’ve been up to… there’s so much more we could say about each of these fab projects.

Health and Wellbeing Consultation
We worked with Cardiff Royal Infirmary and Communities First to run some creative consultation workshops around Adamsdown and Splott. We asked questions like, ‘How does your environment affect your health and wellbeing?’
The responses gathered from the workshops are now being used a) to put together a report to be used in local workplans, and b) to inspire some new artwork for the corridor in the CRI.

Janner House DVD and People Can DVD
We’ve recently created short films with 2 local organisations to help them promote their services. We enjoyed working closely with staff and clients at Janner House, and with staff and volunteers at People Can’s ‘Switched On’ project on every aspect of filmmaking, from scripting to the final edit.

St. Teilo's High School pupils with their work of art

Part of the newly transformed subway near Clarendon Road
Llanedeyrn Subway
We had a great time on this mural project to paint a subway in Llanedeyrn, working together with local police, St. Teilo’s High School and Llanedyrn Primary School. Pupils and police were involved from designing images to painting the subway itself, and the project was a huge success. You can read all about it in the South Wales Echo, click here for the newspaper clipping

GRT showcase
On June 25th People Around Here joined hundreds of others at the Gypsy, Roma Traveller History Month event in St. David’s Hall, Cardiff. We were showcasing our work with travellers and Czech Roma young people over the last few years.

Marlborough parking
People Around Here created a bespoke assembly and workshops to address the issue of problem parking around Marlborough Primary School. We had great fun with the junior pupils designing images for a poster for their school gates. The junior PCSOs will also use the image for a flyer to stick under windscreen wipers of cars parked dangerously around the school.

All smiles from the Intergenerational Project at Peter Lea Primary

Drama workshop in progress - retelling the stories of an older generation
Intergenerational project
During July we brought together older volunteers and pupils in Ysgol Gyfun Plasmawr and Peter Lea Primary school in Fairwater for a week of creative activities. The older volunteers shared stories from their own lives, which the pupils then ‘retold’ through music, art and drama. It was a fantastic experience for all generations involved, and one we hope to repeat in other Cardiff areas. Watch this space for live performances from these groups in early October!

Adamsdown Transition
We spent 2 days in Adamsdown Primary School on a pilot project about the transition to high school. The pupils worked alongside a few year 7 pupils from Willows High School. They wrote and recorded a song, produced artwork and devised dramas, and then showed off all their hard work in a performance for all the Junior pupils.

Mural at Willows High

Mural at Willows High School
Over a cold bank holiday in May, People Around Here got together with HYPE youth forum and other volunteers to brighten up Willows High School in Tremorfa. The young people instigated the project and worked with an artist to design the mural, which shows all of the learning opportunities offered at their school. Their hard work certainly paid off… Head Teacher Joy Ballard said: “It looks absolutely brilliant! We are genuinely thrilled with it and I think our pupils will really enjoy it!”

Great news!

People Around Here has been awarded a grant by BBC Children in Need for £98,980 over 3 years. This will enable us to deliver a project with Cardiff YOS.

We will work with young people who have committed criminal offences, using creative media activities to build their confidence and develop positive attitudes. The project will enable them to learn and use new skills and celebrate their achievements, showing them that a career in crime is not inevitable, and raising their aspirations for a positive future.

The project will begin in September 2012, so look out for more details soon…

Spring 2012 update

SPRING 2012
It has been a busy year so far! So busy that we haven’t had a chance to update the blog, but here’s a whizz through the exciting projects we’ve been doing:

Jan:

Stop the Plop! Megan the dog had a very exciting month, visiting  2,200 children in 10 school assemblies in Ely and Caerau. 400 children took part in a comic strip competition and winning designs will be published in the ‘Grapevine’.

Feb:

Some older volunteers joined us at Tredegarville Primary School in Adamsdown to present the intergenerational artwork created with the pupils about big changes, including transition to high school.

We spent a day at Albany Primary School in Roath, writing and recording a song with year 5 pupils on a multicultural theme called ‘4 corners of the world’.

We thoroughly enjoyed spending a day at Ponthir C.W. Primary School in Torfaen, exploring the story of ‘Draig Goch’ with the entire school.

March:

Bill and Becky worked with Cardiff Youth Council to design a Carnival theme for their very successful launch event at City Hall.

Plasnewydd Community Hall was treated to a colourful new mural in their garden area, which was designed with help from local young people.

A group of talented Eastern European Roma pupils at Fitzalan High School created their own music and lyrics and created a music video in just 4 lunchtime sessions.

We had a fantastic day in Caerau, painting a collaborative mural on a container with local residents and volunteers from ‘Unity’ and ‘CRAC’ local community action groups.
